L’exposition « Breaths » invite les spectateurs à pénétrer dans un espace où la pénombre se confond avec le rêve. Cette série de peintures par Beth Anna Hynum nous présente de bribes de corps surgissant de l’obscurité. Le seuil de la galerie franchi, on devient voyeur autorisé, invité à se laisser ensorceler par les charmantes inquiétudes de l’inconnu. Le spectateur plonge dans l'atmosphère humide des abysses marins où les figures représentées sont embrumées de vapeurs, où les soupirs d’apaisement sont presque audibles.

Dans sa démarche, Hynum s'interroge sur l’espace qu'occupe le corps humain; elle peint les morphologies comme formes pures en abordant la peinture figurative essentiellement par l’expression du corps. Pour la série de peinture « Breaths », elle met en avant pour ses figures qui s’extirpent de l’ombre, le mouvement et la couleur.

Elle souligne la douceur de la chair comme le ferait la main d’un amant à la recherche des courbes de l’autre, caressant la toile de son pinceau avec la délicatesse d’une goutte d’eau roulant sur le corps. La maîtrise des couleurs: un prisme de cristal.

Dans la subtilité des scènes dégagées dans ses peintures, Hynum nous évoquent « mille désirs rôdeurs », comme dirait Maupassant; des véritables nuits suaves qui évoquent un cocon délicieux. Les lignes de chair fuyantes que poursuit l’œil du spectateur continuent à perte de vue…

Beth Anna Hynum, née en 1983 en Papouasie Nouvelle Guinée, vit à Paris depuis 2005. Elle puise son inspiration du rapport naturel entre le corps et son environnement. La danse est une autre source d’inspiration ainsi que la photographie et les lumières du spectacle. Pour cette artiste, créer permet de se découvrir, se connaître pour ensuite dépasser ses limites.

The exhibition « Breaths » invites the spectators to penetrate a space where shadows confound with dreams. The artist Beth Anna Hynum presents a new series of paintings in clair-obscur, snatching images of the human body that rise from nebulous backgrounds. The moment the gallery threshold is passed, one becomes an authorised voyeur, invited to be bewitched by the charming apprehensions of the unknown. The spectator dips into a humid atmosphere where the figures are enveloped in mist and tucked into a maritime abyss, a place where sighs of assuagement are almost audible.

In her work, Hynum addresses the question of space occupied by the human body; she paints it’s morphology as pure form, her approach to figurative painting dealing essentially with the body’s expression. In the series “Breaths,” she privileges movement and color for the bodies that dredge themselves out of the shadows.

She underlines the subtleties of the flesh like a lover’s hand in search of the contours of the other, caressing the canvas with the delicacy of a dewdrop rolling down the body. Her command of the colors: a crystal prism.

Hynum evokes “mille désirs rôdeurs” (a thousand vagabond desires) from Maupassant through the scenes that emerge in her paintings, proving glimpses of delicious nights in a cocoon of well-being. The lines of the body fleeing from the chasing eye of the viewer, following them out of sight…

Beth Anna Hynum was born in Papua New Guinea and has lived in Paris since 2005. She draws her inspiration from the natural relationship between the body and its environment. Danse is another essential inspiration for Hynum, hand in hand with photography and stage lighting. According to Hynum, the engagement in creating empowers self-discovery, a consciousness of limits that allows one to transcend them.

Exposition BREATHS - Beth Anna Hynum

« Le travail de Beth Anna Hynum pourrait être décrit comme l’articulation en deux dimensions de ses interrogations quant à l’expérience humaine. Les thèmes de l’identité et de l’expression de l’individu sont récurrents et visibles, que se soit à travers des paysages humains, des portraits ou, lorsqu’elle photographie, des clichés intimes; Hynum sonde et fait l’examen de la vie en images. La source de cette interrogation est intrinsèquement liée à la manière de représenter le corps, son expression et son occupation dans l’espace ; son approche artistique s’inscrit dans la tradition séculaire des portraits à l’huile et, maniant cette technique traditionnellement utilisée pour rendre l’objet attrayant, elle explore la question de comment ses sujets occupent la totalité de l’espace de manière personnelle et unique.
L’intimité du travail de Hynum est une invitation à voir comment le modèle représenté vit et vibre ; le spectateur se retrouve contraint à affronter sa propre vision de la vie, à s’interroger sur sa voie et sa place dans la société. »~

Beth Anna Hynum’s work could be described as an articulation in two-dimensional form of her questioning of the human experience. The recurrent themes of identity and individual expression, whether it is through human landscapes, portraiture, or the intimate clichés in her photography, Hynum probes life in her art. The source of her questioning continually returning to the treatment of the expression of the body and its occupation of space, she inscribes her art in the historical tradition of figurative oil painting all the while manipulating this traditionally seducing technique to personalize the question of how her subjects uniquely occupy space in life.
The intimacy of Hynum’s work invites the viewer into an expression of how the model pulsates; the spectator is obliged to confront their own view of going about life, the honesty of their own expression, and examine their niche in society.
